Learning to Give Myself Grace as a Dog Owner

Perfectionism and the pressure to get it right

I like things done well. Efficient. Thought through. That part of my personality didn’t disappear when I became a dog owner. If anything, it showed up more.

I wanted to get everything right. Training. Routines. Responses. I paid attention to what I could improve and rarely paused to acknowledge what was already working.

Letting routines evolve instead of forcing them

Over time, I learned that routines don’t need to be rigid to be effective. Some days go exactly as planned. Other days don’t. Cody still feels safe. He’s still cared for. The world doesn’t fall apart.

Letting routines evolve instead of forcing them created more ease for both of us.

What giving myself grace actually looks like

Giving myself grace doesn’t mean lowering standards. It means recognizing effort. It means understanding that being present and thoughtful matters more than being perfect. As long as I’m moving with care and consideration, that’s enough. The rest works itself out.
